goodwood revival

set design for jaguar land rover at Goodwood Revival

For those not familiar, the Goodwood Revival, which opened in 1998, is currently the world’s only historic race meeting in the world that is also staged, in its entirety, in period times. Home to historic race cars and the fashion that goes with it. Working with one of the world’s most famous and beloved vehicle manufacturers, on their spaces at Goodwood was just amazing.

Shortly before Goodwood's 20th anniversary, Design f9 was involved in the design and build of two spaces for the prestigious vehicle manufacturer at the venue. To this end, Transform Venue rented an American-style red barn that would go on to be a home for smaller themed spaces that we designed collaboratively.

The spaces that we designed within the barn were…

  • Experiences – an area made-up to resemble part of a race track, set against branded tile backdrop. The space included a winners podium for visitors; this enabled visitors to pose for photographs, and also could have the chance to win a custom brand experience.

  • Parts and services – in this area, visitors could see and experience a workshop, as one would have looked in the 1950s. Not only that, but parts of the workshop were fully functional and employees were able to have their vintage vehicles restored.

  • Swampy – the now-famous Swampy is an area designed to showcase the fact that no matter the condition of your vehicle (in this case an old abandoned Land Rover left to rot in a swamp), JLR can restore it.

  • Premium – this is an area we designed especially for the showcasing of the clients latest creation.

  • A barn restoration area – this area was built as a display that highlighted each stage of a vehicle restoration projection. The design was finished off with an old and rusted E-Type Jaguar, complete with chickens and straw.

The second space in the design project was a merchandise store for the brand. The space was themed on a 50s-style high-street store. The bespoke, vintage interior was set off perfectly by the till point oak flooring.

We only work with the best

The project was tackled by multiple entities working together, with ourselves and Transform Venue as lead design and the uniquely talented stylist Charlie Cave. Our brief involved us guiding visitors to Goodwood Revival on through a completely immersive bye-gone era, within which they would be able to experience the 40s and 50s life.

As we worked together on this amazing project, and the concepts began to take shape, we started to visualise the designs with a set of 3D renders (which can be seen here). These types of renders give clients a clear idea of what the finished spaces are going to look like before the build phase gets underway.

Finding design inspiration

Inspiration can come from just about anywhere, and in this case, our inspiration came from Jaguar Land Rover's 'Reborn' campaign. The idea of that campaign was to encourage car owners to revisit and rekindle their love for the classic car and transforming their own to their former glory.

Every design needs a starting point and ours was a floor plan together with the requisite 3D model of the generous 4779 square foo space. Together with these elements, the interior of the vintage store was introduced to the same careful and considered treatment.

With these elements in place, we began to focus on the 5 areas that would go on to feature the 5 stories that told the ‘Reborn’ narrative.

Design f9 is proud of all the projects that we have been fortunate enough to work on, but this was genuinely something special.
